    Default Best Job Ever?

Was just thinking about all the different things I've done in my life (and there is quite a range! lol) and what I liked best.
So here's a thread about your best job ever.

What is it/was it? Are you still doing it?

My first job here in the US was waiting tables at a small diner in a college town. I picked that because I figured I'd be forced to learn English fast. Kind of a sink or swim approach.

And it was fantastic! I met so many wonderful friends at work. Or maybe just being 21 was fantastic? Either way. I consider the waitress gig my best job.

And I've had some pretty cool careers after that...

I am a manager in the purchasing department at Carmax. I get to appraise $50,000+ cars (some $100 ones too). I get to go to auctions and spend massive amounts of other peoples money. Most importantly, I have been able to take this week of while my wife has been in the hospital. No questions asked, and I was told to take as much time as I need. The benefits are awesome and the people are better.

Nice! I used to do the big money thing too and it was fun. My projects ranged from around $125 million to $815 million each. Also very nice company to work for. Loved being able to take a yoga class during lunch hour and stuff like that.
But still doesn't come close to waiting tables. ;)

I hope your wife feels better soon!

    I have two favorite jobs...

1st - Computer repair as a side job in college. PROs, It was good profit since it was mostly labor, no overhead because I ordered what I needed at the time. I worked from home in the comfort of my own office with no one to bug me. People seemed happy paying me because I was cheap and in college (in other words there was a cause). CONs, Unfortunately, there is too much competition in computer repair in San Antonio so I never thought about taking it further.

2nd - My current job, teaching. PROs, Everything I show/teach to the kiddos seems to amaze them, even the simplest things. I get to joke around occasionally and play at recess 5 days a week (yep teachers play too sometimes). My co-workers are great and they always seem to want to feed me. CONs, Administration and paperwork can get to you sometimes. As well, each student is expected to be at a certain proficiency at the end of the year (hard to do when classroom sizes keep growing) and guess who's responsible if they're not. Lastly, education has taken humongous hits in the past year, I hope I don't lose my job in the near future.

my favorite job...although I don't wish to go back to it because I wouldn't be able to support my crew now, would have to be when I was a valet/bellman at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort.

During the summer I made fat cash like $200-$500 cash in tips a day (winter, don't ask...lol) it was fun, got to drive some sweet rides and best of all I met my sweetheart there. She was a little cutie working at the front desk.

Took awhile to get her, but....4 kids later and here we are

Still working it at the moment...

Best job of anyone I know, love what I do and do what I love. I am a marriage and family therapist and I do contract work serving military families. Most of the year I work locally and once in a great while they send me somewhere interesting. Today I am in Landstuhl, Germany and it's in the 70s here with a beautiful sunset. Can't complain (and yet I do.) Three more weeks and I get to see my sweet husband again. Cons: self employment, so higher taxes, no benefits, and zero job security. Even with that, it's great work if you can get it.

    Two jobs come to mind.

Junior and senior year of high school I was a waiter. Loved the job, and loved the fringe benefits even better. I'm with you Karin. Loved waiting tables.

Second best was teaching. Taught advance electronic theory and medical equipment troubleshooting and repair. Students were new and old Soldiers, and by far a deeply rewarding profession.

I've often thought of teaching as showmanship. You've got to get the attention of the student, hold it, then draw it to the topic being covered. And when they understand... Awesome job. Loved it. Would love to do it again.

I was a substitute teacher between my BS, and going to Rice for a PhD. I got several long term jobs, and they were a ton of fun. When asked in interviews what I considered my ideal job, it was "High School Science - but I can't afford it."

That being said, I had a LOT of fun as a computer consultant, on long term projects. We were famous for working very hard, and then playing even harder. But, with a family growing up and with me out of town all week, I went back into sales.

I'm still in the career field I love. Out of high school I spent a semester at a large university in central Texas - wasn't for me. I turned wrenches on semis and worked steel construction. Somewhere along the way I started volunteering at the fire department. It turned into my career at the age of 22 and I have been doing it ever since. The funnest part was being a line officer. I got to still have fun with guys and actually do all the "cool stuff", but had plenty of responsibility. I have moved up the chain a little at a time and am currently off shift work so I don't have the same cons as before such as 24 hour shifts and working holidays. I currently do investigations, criminal investigations, inspections, code enforcement, public education, public relations, and juvenile programs.

I still miss screaming down the road in the big red truck sometimes though.

I worked at a gas station when I was in high school. It was a blast! Worked in the evening with friends after the boss was gone for the day. Being young and dumb probably helped with it being so fun. Back in the day of full service gas stations.

My career in Law Enforcement has been great and I would do it again if I could start over. Patrol was a lot of fun. Investigations was really rewarding and administration is challenging but easy. The down side to it all is if you make a mistake the consequences can be very serious.

You can't make up the kind of stuff we see and get into on a regular basis. And the stories I could tell about your friends and neighbors! If it weren't for love and alcohol I wouldn't have a job.
