Its not about being rich -- its about respecting the fact that EVERYONE has a rough time, and that this is how our LFS pay for their rent, food, bills... We can't haggle them down to no profit every time, else theres no business left to visit

I do think the employees reaction was fairly rude. Sure we all have bills to pay, but it's best practice to politely decline, not be so, well, rude.

Don't go to Mexico on a cruise if you don't want to haggle.

Yes I agree. It's okay to ask. It's okay to decline. It's not okay to be rude (either party)

Was I out of line to ask for a better price? Is that the kind of Customer Service you get in San Antonio? I am just wondering.

What did it cost you to ask? Nothing. What does it cost the LFS? A sale lost to you and/or perhaps your money going to a competitor. That's business.

i TRY not to ask for a deal but some stores i go to will just give me a discount because i have been there so many times ( i think its part of being a "loyal" customer most places will do this)

but don't get me wrong I'm the type of person who will go to all the LFS to see who has the best prices on corals especially one that i want. For fish i only need to stop at 2 stores

First, I'm not sure how you think getting that response from 1 employee at 1 LFS is typical of all customer service in San Antonio. I don't know you and none of us were there, but maybe the employee detected a slight attitude or sarcasm and that was the reason for her unusual response. There's always two sides to a story. Second, I think most people know what places or types of places you can make deals or haggle over prices. A pet/fish store is not a car dealer where the price tag is just a suggested retail price and you are supposed to haggle with a sales person over what you want to pay. It's not a fleamarket or Craigslist or Ebay so I'm not sure why anyone would automatically assume they would be able to get a deal or haggle on a price. Stores and restuarants put prices on things as that is what they cost. Only time I've known LFS to make "deals" is if you were buying some used equipment or buying lots of stuff like a large amount of live rock or something. Of course if you have gotten to know the LFS owner well and are on friendly terms then that's another story. But I wouldn't walk into a store expecting a "deal", especially from an employee that doesn't know you from John Doe. Definately wouldn't walk out upset that they didn't give me a "deal" either. If I don't like the price, then I shop around. Not going to get mad at a store for keeping to their posted prices, they can't stay in business long marking everything down for anyone that asks.

I was not upset that I was not giving a deal. I was just kind of shocked at the response. I am huge into Customer Service and this particular employee has always been lacking in that area. I was just wondering how you all are treated in San Antonio. Probably better because there are more choices than Corpus. Thanks for all your responses.
