    Default Guess the bill!

presented with the following car symptoms, what would you estimate the repair bill to be like?

shakes violently and shuts down when you stop it (unless you leave one foot on break and give it a little gas with the other)
increases RPM but doesn't shift into the next gear when you give it gas
then all of a sudden it jumps forwards with the excess gas it got
all along 'service engine light' is on (sometimes flashing, sometimes not)

    (car is an automatic)

If you'd like to put your guess down post a response. I'll give the correct answer whenever I find out

$1.52 The cost of a 44 mag bullit. Shoot the poor thing.
Seriously, Problems are idle when stopped in gear, transmission doesn't shift, service light is on (when its flashing that means you can be damaging something seriously).
Cost depends on make model and where is gets serviced. Transmmission module possibly, or torqe converter. How many miles on car and have you ever changed transmission fluid of towed anything?

    2001 Saturn L-200, around 190,000 miles
Yes sometimes I have had the fluid changed. In fact this Spring we even splurged on a rubber gasket thing and having the pan straightened out

no way. it's not even past 200,000!
This car has goat hoof prints all over the hood and tricycle handle marks all over the sides. The kids spray painted part of it blue and then when I got upset about the spray paint they used metal rasps to rasp it back off.
The car needs to hang in there until the kids are older because I would have a heart attack if they did all that to a nice new car.

That many miles, I'm betting on it needing a new transmission due to stripped gears or something else and with idling problems, it could be something wrong in the fuel injection system to something wrong with one of the airlines under the hood causing it to loose pressure. Either way, expense fix for an old car.
