  1. #1

    Default jon boats ?

i been trying to do more fishing lately and have been thinking of buying a cheap john boat .... but have a few ?'s

will it be ok if i used it for bay fishing ? saw people doing it when we were on the dolphin cruise ??? i wouldnt try going out during hurricanes and crazy storms ?

are they fairly easy to work on ? on wiki it says the motor style is real easy to work on .

how many people can these hold i looked on google img and see 2 people up 11 ( not saying i would put 11 people on the boat) maybe 4 ??? would that be safe ?

when looking into a boat what should you look for ?

    thanks maast

We use a 14 foot flat bottom sometimes and have put 4 people on it. It has to be very calm though. We just fish out of rockport for the most part. Ive done a little work on it but nothing other than regular maintenance.

It depends on what type of fishing and how much you want to spend...I've done the Jon boat and it makes me alittle nervous on the bay...key would be to stay on the flats or jump out and wadefish if you have 3 or 4 people...I have a small scooter boat and it fits my needs for both the local lakes and bay...it can't handle big chops but its a nice ride...I can offer up a ride next time I go out if you want to get a feel on what to look for...I've done minor tune up stuff but other than that I leave it to the experts....

Getting a kayak is also very popular and cheaper as well...I see quite a few out at brauning when I'm out...I contemplated this before I invested in a boat...

They have a forsale forum with pretty good deals...you have to ready because they move pretty fast...also just check Craigslist...make sure and take out for a test ride...nobody should have a problem if its a sound boat...there's also a local forum but I forgot the name...ill look it up...people always recommend Carolina skiffs as a good all around reasonable boat...

I certainly wouldn't use a jon boat at the Texas Coast. Nearly every afternoon the wind picks up to 20-25, and kicks up waves that would swamp a jon boat. I second the kayak idea - they are unsinkable and great for this use. You can launch it anywhere.
