i have used acrylic rods that you can find at places like Regal Plastics....$ 6 - $10 depending on thickness of the rod per 6 foot piece. Yes you have to drill the rock for the most part, but they are pretty soft. Then once you have the arrangement you like, you can fill in the holes with pond foam. That will stabilize it.
