    Default Archohelia Rediviva in stock!

Well after trying for the better part of a year, we have finally scored some of these sweet corals!

They are relatively new to the hobby, you can read up on them here:

Aggman, If this is truley the genus they are saying it is then it is differne than what we have there locally. The coral that is found locally that looks very very simalar to this is from the genus Oculina. That being said the pictures of the coral they are offering looks very simalar to an Oculina but I am not familiar with the genus they are saying this is. I will do some research and get back to everyone on whether this is legitimately "rare" or not.

Ok, so I just looked this up and it is legit. I was correct in saying it is closely related to the species of coral we see here locally (Port Aransas jetties) in that it is in the family Oculinidae, however it is in a completely different genus than the corals that we have. So yes, depending on if you are willing to spend the money it may be worth it. Just remember, a coral, and anything for that matter, is only worth as much as someone is willing to spend on it!

Are the Oculina sp. that occur locally legal to collect? Anyone have any pics? Maybe someone can send me some??

Archohelia (seems to be used interchangeably with Petrophyllia, for whatever reason they changed the name) is indeed a member of the Oculinidae.

I'm quite sure the Australians have read the article in Reef Hobbyist Magazine and are very well informed of pricing here. So as a result we paid an arm and a leg for these guys. Time will tell how rare they really are and if that rarity continues to dictate high prices.

The Oculina sp. that we have here locally are not legal to collect with out special permits from Texas Parks and Wildlife and I believe even then they can only be used for research purposes. I dont have any pictures but they look basically the same as the Archohelia, but are not as branching and are a brown color with white/clear tentacles.
