The Lounge A place to hang out and discuss "Off Topic" subject matter.
now if this was in the reefkeeping area then that is a understandable question, but since its in the lounge its just not thought out by you

Honestly though gun or not, if the person attacking you is trained and less then 3' away, your toast. If someone really wants to get you, they will get you. IMO, carrying a gun in most cases is a false sense of security.
I watched a 65 year old man during training disarm, knock down and subdue an armed SWAT officer before his gun was more then a few inches out of his holster. This was a training exercise so the officer even knew what was coming. This was done to prove that a trained assailant can be just as deadly unarmed.

Yeah, I've read some people say that a person standing within I think 21ft. can run to you faster than you can react, draw a concealed handgun, and have it on target. Of course not every situation is going to involve someone running at you so if you have a gun and have practiced it could still save your life. And I agree, for most people a gun does offer a false sense of security and even bravado. Just owning one won't save your life, but practicing, training, being prepared for various situations, and being prepared to react using means other than a gun will help.
And while a gun may offer a false sense of security, so does thinking the police will be there to save you or that nothing bad will ever happen to you or your family.
As for the 6 page long thread about guns on this forum, it is the lounge where we can all share different interests besides saltwater fish tanks. Most people here have more than one hobby/interest in life. And I believe one of, if not the longest running threads here was about an online space game!![]()

dude, forgot about that. I hope the Chaeto worked out for you. I remember giving you a paltry amount. The stuff has grown so much after I realized what I was doing wrong I had to trim out a bunch the other day. I couldn't find any takers so I took it up to AD. I think I gave him six softball sizes. I had to use two hands to pull out huge clumps of the stuff.
As far as the height, not so much anymore (due to my advanced years), but more often as a teenager I was always in trouble. I can't explain it but it seemed each and every week I would be in some kind of fist fight at school or in the neighborhood. Fights I couldn't win. Either I was too big and a bully, or too big and a wus for losing. And then there are all of the hundreds of Napoleon want to be cats whose motives were always to be the one to take down the big guy. Believe it or not I'm a reader, and always had my nose buried in a book.
My old man taught me and my brother (my bro is 5'5" tall, but we are almost mirror-like in appearance) that when the kids were throwing rocks at us to run at them. Run them down hard and fast. Don't worry about the rocks that do hit you as they probably won't stop you. I thought he was a nut himself for this advice but in 4th or 5th grade I tried it and sure enough I got through to the kid.
I hear the same thing about knives, that they are more dangerous than the guns in combat as the folks with the knives can come in quick slash you several times before you have a chance to react or draw. I don't know what I would do in this scenerio but if my old man's training comes to bear when I do get in a situation like that I would like to think that before giving thought to the ramifications of my actions that I will rush in and use everything I've got to end the guy. Teeth, pencil, keys, feet, 280 pounds...
Oh, and I'm not near 7' tall. I'm 6'7", I feel that 6'8" and above is freaky tall, I'm normal. I met a 7' cat in Iraq in the Australian army. Wow, that dude was tall, I felt small... er... short, I felt short.
