Reminds me of purchasing a website template online. In order to be able to manipulate them you still need to have the skillset to do the work. So, I'm sure anyone setting up their own server would not have been a customer anyways.

I just think that the lack of mentioning that hardware must be compatible to work together is hilarious.

Having built my own desktops and servers for years now, that site makes me laugh! Seriously, anyone who can match colors and shapes can "build" a server. Rob has the main point though. The skills to make it "run" are what's lacking. Provided they get past hardware compatibility issues that is.

It reminds me of the poster sized pictures they used to send along in the box with your computer on how to set it up. Nice contrasting colors and simple, easy steps that even a child could perform. Ahh windows 3.1, I am going to go play my intellivision now....

    8 BITS OF GRAPHICS AMAZEMENT.

Of course you can get a heck of a lot more involved with servers. But, just like some people have a simple tank with a few fish, there are others with the reactors, lights, controllers, etc. Everyone has to begin somewhere and this could be the stepping point some people take to learn servers and system administration. It gives them that point they can then jump off onto their own and start learning.

Very true, but the site isn't targeting those who have no experience. Upon closer inspection, they are targeting those who are at least somewhat familiar with DIY computer systems. Step 1 assumes you have spare/old parts lying around and the rest of the steps will get a very simple file server working. However, using an Open Source desktop distrobution seems silly when you can get Ubuntu Server for the same price (eg free).

Granted, the first step is missing a bunch of stuff (not all mobos and chips are compatible, memory, etc), but what's the joke??
