Thread: Shark Week

    Default Shark Week

    Anyone else enjoying Shark Week?
I really like most of the shows and the awesome footage, but I think they can definitely do without all of the "Deadliest Sharks" and "Worst shark attack" shows. I wish they would focus more on the understanding of and education about sharks rather than shows that will set fear into the minds of the viewers...

    i agree 100%

Love Shark week but the emphasis on them being Deadly only fuels the fear of those who already misunderstand and fear them.

I agree. If you ask most people what first comes to mind when you say the word "Shark" it's either Jaws, or a mindless killing machine. It's once people really get to understand these amazing creatures do you begin to get a true feeling of how awesome they are. Not many creatures have survived for millions of years basically unchanged. They are as close as one can get to being perfect. Awesome tactile feel, awesome smelling, reserve teeth; hell they can even detect friggin electrical signals.

In college I had a prof who had a picture from spring break 1999 on his wall taken from a helicopter. On it you can see hundreds of people enjoying the water. And all around them you can see many, many sharks. Not ONE person was attacked. He uses that picture to help show people a sharks true nature.

I find it somewhat entertaining that they fill shark week full of shows involving small children getting attacked by sharks, and then, during the commercial break you get "Please sign this petition to end shark finning forever!" What average American viewer with children is going to be like, "Oh well, golly gee, let's save these baby eating beasts!" Besides all that, I think it's going to take a little bit more than just a petition to stop finning anywhere. Has anyone seen Sharkwater?

Yeah, I bought it and have only had the stomach to watch it once. It's going to take A LOT more than a petition, maybe more like major military force. Multi-million dollar industries don't go away with the use of pleasantries.

I own it. I watch it every couple of months and I cry every single time. I feel so helpless about it sometimes.
