If you go external make sure you use unions and shutoffs between the tank/pump, and the sump/pump. This way you can remove the pump for maintenance and just shut off the water from each direction. You can see one in the picture the one on the left side.

i have placed several unions and will be placing shutoff valves in all my pipelines... i learned this the hard way with my current 75gal. (no unions and only 1 shutoff valve) and have learned from here in maast many ideas. thanks for advice.
