Default Anybody tried the new Shiner Commemorator yet?

I picked up a 6 pack last night. Gotta tell you, I've been looking forward to this. A doublebock from Shiner...

Opened it, along with a Paulener Salvator (the original doublebock) and a Sam Adams Doubleback (I bought 9 cases a year ago - still have a few left...).

Salvator is my favorite beer, that's available here in the US. Kaiser Dopplemaltz is my alltime favorite.

Anyway, the Shiner was a HUGE disappointment. The best I can figure is they thought the masses wouldn't like a true doublebock. It's like a bocknahalf. No depth that a double usually has, and not a hint of sweetness. The others just plain killed it. Mamma agrees - but she just really likes her Bud Select. Likes both the others over the Shiner. I'm going to compare it to a bottle of Optimator I have on the boat...

    Anyone else?

Wow that was the perfect review, I agree the same way. I am A huge shiner fan, but it was a let down.

    Salvator has it hands down.

A little off the subject, but it is funny how times have changed. Shiner use to cost $2 a case and you could not give it away. Today people are willing to pay $2 a beer for the stuff. I wish they would buy the rights to Lonestar and make that. It doesn't seem right a foreigner like Miller making Lonestar. Once again sorry about changing the subject. Oh yea, if somebody from Shiner reads this, it would be nice if you were open on weekends so we visitors could come and drink two beers for wooden nickels like we did in the old days at Lonestar and the Hall of Horns.

Have not seen the Shiner doublebock yet. Love the Sam Adams , but unfortunately did not stock up like you did. Too bad there are not more good choices vs. all the high end hoppy IPAs available. Looks like I'll have stick with my gold standards: Stone Co. Arrogant ******* and Avery Barleywine Style Ale. Would highly recommend these brews if you haven't sampled. New Belgium also has a bunch of new seasonals as well...the "Trippel" was mighty tasty, their version of Chimay but in a 12oz bottle.

Haven't seen the new shiner. But I will still try it with an open mind a palate. Last winter I enjoyed the "Black" but haven't been able to drink yet this winter.

For me, it doesn't get any better than a tall glass of ice cold Guinness
