Default Hi all! Just moved to Corpus from Michigan!

Hi everybody, my name is Jason Heivilin. I just moved down from Grand Rapids, Michigan to Corpus to attend grad school for Mariculture at TAMUCC. I've been doing research on corals and marine ornamentals for quite a while, my undergraduate thesis was actually on bleaching temperature thresholds, and I'm currently working on a growth rate analysis--looking at growth bands in coral skeltons and comparing them to available climate data from the location and date of collection. I also used to work for the premiere LFS/service company in West Michigan, Blue Fish Aquarium/Aquarium Services as their SW showroom/retail guy.
I was wondering where to go to get quality stuff, though. There seems to be a definite shortage of LFS in my area, so is the drive to San Antonio worth it? Is there anyplace around that quarantines their livestock? Anyplace with hard-to-find corals and FW fish?
On another note, where can I actually catch some fish around here? I've heard Bob Hall Pier, but I have no idea where it is, other than on the island.
Also if you guys know any good collecting sites I'd be glad to hear them. I've been to Packery Channel and gotten some killis and gobies, but that's about it.
    Thanks,
    Jason A. Heivilin

    Jason,

Welcome to Texas. Hope you like hurricanes! We have a CC folks here, that I'm sure will chime in. We are in CC most weekends, as our sailboat is in CC City Marina.

Holy cow, I just got my electric bill for the first 8 days after I moved in. $76?! For 8 days?! Holy cow, how does anyone afford to keep a reef down here?! Once I get my first monthly bill I may have an aneurysm.

On the positive side you won't have much of a heating bill.

True, but I don't have all of my tanks even set up yet. Right now I'm hoping that I don't get any damage from the hurricane and that my FW fish start to breed like crazy so that I can make a little cash on the side from them. I need to find a job, too. Living on this student budget without one would mean getting rid of my tanks, and a mariculture student can't have that!

I just saw this.... Welcome to MAAST, Jason. When things get back to normal maybe we can go collecting around the island if you feel up to it. Welcome again.
