Overflow Box Recommendation

I'm in the process of upgrading my filtration setup, and am looking for a new overflow box. The tank is a 120G FOWLR. I'm shooting for 10x water circulation per hour.

Any recommendations on an overflow box? I poked around on the Internet, but wanted to post here for feedback as well.

I have the Eshopps overflow for up to 75 gallons on my 55 gallon. It was easy to set up and maintains a syphon even when my electricity goes out. So it starts back up when I turn my pump back on. They have styles for up to 125 gallons and larger. You could also have someone custom make one for you, but it was very easy to just order one and set it up in aout 15 minutes. just my 2 c.

You might have Ace, AKA "hobogato" build one for you. Save some $$ AND get what you really want.

I have the Eshopps dual and though it can maintain its syhpon its noisy and will continue to push water into your sump until the syphon is lost eventually due to air bubbles...then you have water going into your tank and none going out

...so if your not home....

especially if your pump also backflows into your sump

possible return pump burn out

Not to derail the thread, but you do have a break-siphon hole in your return, right? If it is clean and working properly, an overflow should not drain more water from the display than the top level of the overflow.

I have made that mistake before too...but I did get a nice new floor out of it...at MY cost.

I used to have a Lifereef hang-on overflow and I never had any problems with it. Lifereef stuff tends to be a bit more expensive though than the other brands.

Break syphon hole? well...i'm gonna say i dunno and probably no because I have seen it backflow and dang near flood when i shut off power to do a water change...so what is that and how do i fix it...lol


I only had a 20g before with hang ons...so this sump world is still new to me

hence the skimmer thread i had when i first got my euro reef and went OMG...how do I...lol..

I have an Eshopps single, in a 75 gallon tank and it works perfectly. I am new to this hobby myself (9 months) and started with a Marineland overflow box that was recommended to me from a local pet store in Round Rock, man what a piece of junk that was. I switched over to the Eshopps and I am able to run my return pump at max and the overflow box keeps up with the flow easily. It does make a bit of noise but I am ok with it.

Also to reply to a post within this post, I put a check valve in line with the return pump line and return siphon is no more. Drilling holes also works to break siphons.

Mine is a double...I think a single would have been better with a split to the fuge

if there were more flow...it wouldn't be as noisy is my guess...but what do i know...

yeah i got a PM about drilling...will do! can i do that in tubing and have it work?

what does a check valve look like?
