Unless your dog has a strong pedigree and preferably a show record, I'd strongly discourage you in this. IF you got your dog from a reputable breeder, it should have a decent pedigree. However, it's also likely that the breeder restricted your ability to breed/register your dog without his/her consent. You also REALLY need to have your dog OFA and CERF certified (hips and eyes) before breeding. Any reputable stud owner will require that - and as a working dog, it's only right that you make sure your dog isn't passing on serious faults.

BTW, there is absolutely NO money in backyard dog breeding. Just have one sick litter, and you'll easily see mid 4 figure vet bills. Raising a litter of puppies isn't for the faint at heart!

agreed with bstreep. people don't realize how much it costs to breed and care for puppies. you have to raise them inside or an environment controlled area cause of the weather, that means cleaning up after all the puppies a few times a day, feeding the mother a good diet, checkups and shots and tests for everyone.

if you are wanting to breed just for the fun of it and not looking for money and don't mind loosing money I would say just find an unfixed male maybe online or in the classifieds. i worked in a pet store for a few years and i know of a couple people who bred their dogs and tried giving the puppies away eventually because it was costing them so much money to care for them. but they were breeding just so they could get puppies with their parents personalities so other people could have good family dogs. i can't say i don't approve of backyard breeding because otherwise i wouldn't have found my lovely mutts. just be careful with who you deal with and who the puppies go to.

I guess if forgot to mention mine is the male. I was thinking as the male's owner, it would be up to the female's owner to do all that. Really, i feel bad that my seven year old Australian Shepherd has yet to spread his seed and i would like him to be able to. Truly i have never seen another Australian Shepherd as beautiful as him and i would like to see his puppies too. I'm almost certain he's not AKC or anything like that but im not sure.

April thats what i want to do with him. He's been the best dog i could ask for i feel it would be wrong not to let him have puppies so other people could enjoy his traits

ditto for some of what the other folks say. its alot of work, lots of poop noise etc i made a net 200 bucks off of a litter of 8 lab puppies. i really enjoyed the experience and i would do it again just make sure that you have the time to take care of them properly.

and if you dont have the papers your dog isnt AKC... a breeder trick is to go CKC you need two pictures and two witnesses and your dog will be registered (meaning if your looking for a dog dont go CKC its bull) but it will sell your pups.

Without an AKC certificate, please don't breed your dog. Also, it IS up to you to make sure that your stud is free from common genetic defects, before breeding. Have him OFA and CERF certified. Yup. I will cost you $$$. But seriously, it's ONLY responsible/right that you get it done. It's just not fair to the future owners of the puppies. Passing on hip displasia or blindness just ain't right. And NO, you can't tell without testing. And YES, I'm a Geneticist by education.

Breeding him for the purpose of "spreading his seed" doesn't sound like a great reason to breed him. There are alot of dogs in pounds and shelters that are there because another dog spread his seed. If your serious abput breeding him, research into doing it the right way.

Check this out hopefully it will sway you in a better direction

I like the others do not agree with you bredding, but do agree with giving your dog a companion. My wife and I have 3 pugs; all of which are "fixed" and 2 of which are rescues. The best thing you can do is give your buddy a new Aussie friend that really needs a home.
