Sea Hares

yesterday i decided to make a quick run over to petco and see what they had that might help clean up this hair algae a bit more. i was really just looking for a lawnmower blenny... while looking i saw one of the most interesting things, a sea hare. i called the guy over and started asking a bunch of questions.

he pretty much told me they are GREAT for cleaning tanks and wont stop until it is clean, but he then said that once the tank is clean it is very easy for them to starve to death. he was saying that most people will pick them up for a little bit and then sell them back to the store.

i had thought about getting it, but my kids get really attached and i would hate to bring him in and then toss him out once i no longer needed him.

i ended up getting a lawnmower blenny. hes cool, but not as cool.

how much truth is behind this guys words?

I say he hit the nail on the head. Sea hares are great I had a bad hair algae problem similar to yours within a matter of a week or two, in my opinion they work better than a blenny.

what did you do after the tank was clean?

I gave it to a buddy who was having the same issue.

so you do just pass them along. i guess i need to start a WT(B)orrow thread. it would be cool if you could actually hang on to them and keep them healthy and alive.

I'd do some reading on them, many people consider them to be for expert reefers due to there sensitivity to changes and strict diet.

im hoping this little lawnmower blenny will do the trick... he hasnt started munching yet, but hes still scoping out the place.

I have seen threads on other sites where people do this. I have seen a Matted Filefish get passed around to several people, fish goes in eats all the aptasia, and goes on to next infested system when the aptasia is gone. Good idea if you ask me!
