Thread: Light or Flow?

    Default Light or Flow?

    So my wife & I decided to attend "Financial Peace University" (a class by Dave Ramsey).

    We graduated the class about 2 weeks ago.

    So we are saving money smarter, spending money smarter & giving away money smarter.

    According to Dave, we are supposed to have a "blow money" category in the budget.

    Well I've managed to save a little bit of money towards my reef.

    So the question is;

    Do I spend my blow money on FLOW or on more light?

    Currently my main display is lacking in both departments. I have a 36" wide tank & my 19" LED pendant isn't adequately lighting the entire tank.

    OR, since I need more flow (cuz it's only my return flow right now) but only own suction cup based power heads(which I do not trust), should I upgrade to a vortech or jebao power head(which both use magnets).

    So essentially, flow or light?

    Personally, I would go with light. I have a 8 gallon Aquaeon Evolve and am only running the stock return pump for flow and have no problem keeping a SPS only reef. Likewise, on my 150 tall, when I had it setup as saltwater, I only ran a tunze wavebox and a return pump. From my own experiences, I feel flow is emphasized a little too much.

    Light!....

    And if your budget is that tight, a mp40 or 10 is more of a luxury.....you can get by with other more affordable powerheads....

    We've decided to order some strong magnetics from k & j magnetics. With some epoxy, those magnets & a little brain power - we can construct an ugly vortech!

    So it looks like I'll be going with the light option.

    Will not be anything like a vortech but with a wavemaker and the right amount of powerheads you can get enough flow so stuff doesn't settle...

    MJ 1200 with the superflow kit will work pretty good and they are not expensive either.
    Reefing is just like cooking, all the ingredients have to be just right , except you don't have to bring the water to a BOIL...
