Love the idea of the emergency sump under the tank. Would you really need an ATS with the hiatt? That's going to be a pita to clean. Flame hawks are the best and I'm glad your thinking of adding the betta. They hide way too much, but they're beautiful fish.

I'm googling your outside ATS idea to see if I can see any examples. Is your house built into a hill? From the pics of your chiller when it was for sale, I remember it looked like it was on the ground under your deck.
