Thread: Blue Boxfish dedicated tank

    Default Blue Boxfish dedicated tank

I am in the process of setting up a 65g tank dedicated to a blue boxfish. Surprisingly there is not much detailed information on their preferred tank setup besides lower flow and non-aggressive tankmates. I am looking to see if a MP10 is going to be ok for him. Since it will be lower flow, should I set this up with a DSB or no? I wanted to go higher flow so the tank wouldnt get so dirty, so do I need to add more PHs on low flow to prevent dead spots? ATM I plan on a 30g sump, refuge, and skim. Is running carbon a necessity with these? I plan on this tank being dedicated to this fish along with my current clown and mandarin. Also would it be wiser to have LFS ship and quarantine it or is ordering it online ok? I have heard that these do not make it through the mail very often. Any feedback is much appreciated, Thx!

i think your tank is too small, they usually come in pretty big even a med is pretty big for a 65. also they usually dont come in eating so a well established tank so he can pick at rocks for food until it eats frozen food would be wise.
i had one eating well but he scrapped his face pretty bad and got ich from stress. not a easy fish to keep.

I had just read your thread before I posted and was actually gonna message you. **** well I have been very misinformed as a few sites selling them suggest minimum 55-65g. Theres a serious lack of info on these fish, but I presume its because they dont do too well in aquariums. Did you get yours from online or LFS? Did you have any deaths resulting from his death? (ie. poison) Sorry yours passed, but would you consider owning another? ER got me hooked when they had one not too long ago, his personality was very unique.

they get 16 inches when full grown. ive hade a few box fish and all have perished with no other complications but im not very nice as soon as they start to get real weak and show signs of not pulling through i remove them and freeze them. as soon as they stop swimming and breath is shallow ill remove them. ich is worst thing that can happen to a box they usually dont pull through. i got mine from ER, they have sold a few others that where eating pretty well before leaving, so louis is doing something right.
