Default Did you know...? Mysis fact when feeding clownfish...

Feeding lots of mysis will make your clownfish super bright orange? I've been experimenting with this myth that I heard on another forum. It's true.

I fed my fish mysis daily for a week and then none for a week and then repeated. The weeks I fed with mysis their oranges were BRIGHT and deep in color.

Also...mysis can cause eggs to be tough to hatch so not a good option for breeders to feed heavily on mysis.

No/very little mysis (i say very little because the rod's food I fed has some in it):

    On heavy daily mysis feedings:

Very cool, also very cool that we have a clown breeder on here that speaks openly as to how the breeding program works.

I've been feeding mine mysis, heavily. Maybe I should back off and watch it first hand.

thanks Allan, I'm still learning though.

I guess with all the drama I went through when starting up it just encouraged me to share info.

You would be surprised the extremes some breeders will go to prevent a newbie from getting any kind of start. As far as to sell me claimed breeder pairs that weren't even bonded! Calling other breeders and telling them not to sell me broodstock, yeah, seriously all around texas. Pretty crazy to say the least.

Fortunately I have established a good rapport with a couple of large scale captive bred businesses that I can trust and tap into for broodstock.

I've always been one to share experience and document what I'm doing... I mean it's how I learn too.

That's very interesting. I guess the guys can stop playing at being mafia, for there's an actual clownfish mafioso here in texas.

I'm anxious to try my hand at raising a clutch or murder or what ever it is called, of little clownies. I just haven't wrapped my head around growing phyto to feed plankton to feed fry concept. But I'm just as excited to see you suceed at it. Leroy impresses the heck out of me when he starts talking about it.

Allan, your fish bright orange? I have also heard of vendors feeding lots of mysis right before a photoshoot to boost colors. I only saw gradual changes though and after a week of heavy feddings a noticable difference in the brightness of the oranges.

Not sure if you saw my comment... but some breeders say a heavy mysis diet can cause eggs to be delayed in hatching.

My eggs hatch and the broodstock fish get mysis from the rod's food, but I used to feed only mysis which could have been causing me some problems. Not sure...because only recently thought of it.

Don't grow phyto man...just purchase the stuff and freeze it. Rotifers give you enough to worry about lol. Check my build thread I posted my process on phyto and rotis

    I plan on memorizing it.

When they start spawning, I should wait a few spawns before actually attempting it, right?

yeah, that way you can get their cycle down. After 3 clutches you will have the cycle of when they lay and hatch. Plus they just keep getting larger and healthier.

I wanted to pull first and second clutches but was kind of hard because I didn't know hatch night.

I never really had the desire to breed but the temptation is calling me after reading all the experiences. It seems like a lot of fun!
