    They are out there....

This is not a made up photo. I took this at my local Home Depot yesterday. What you see is six windows on top of that vehicle, stacked on top of two 2x4's, with two more 2x4's on top of the windows. A ratchet strap runs through the back windows and around the mess (sort of), and another runs over the hood (directly over the windows). They ran out of ratchet straps, so the rest of the tiedown was done with string!. Talk about a goat rope. I waited a long time before I left the parking lot. I had no wish at all to be in the middle of that mess when it came unspooled.

People of Walmart ain't got nothin' on the People of Home Depot.

It always amazes me that people don't plan on how to get their projects home till they get out to their car. Like the time I saw a guy with a stack of 2x4's trying to load them into a 2 door dodge neon.

    Too funny sherita!

I've spent enough time at home depot to see some truly amazing things. People don't act right when in the presence of building materials. The one I will always remember is the fellow who romped on his truck pulling out of the parking lot showing off..............and dealt about 15 sheets of drywall out one after another, right through the intersection. Nope, no tiedown, no string, no nothing. Or the fellow that I found by following the trex brick road, for about four miles. For those not in the know, Trex is a synthetic deck material that comes in "boards". And it's slicker than greased glass when stacked on top of itself. He didn't have his goodies cinched down with a choke, and the trex was quietly departing out the back of his truck, one at a time. I've seen trails of rebar on the side of the road. Bundles of insulation (found the truck they belonged to). Base trim (no vehicle associated with it). If you can think of it, someone has thought up a way to launch it from the vehicle they are hauling it in. Sometimes the big box home improvement stores are better than tv.

I can tie stuff down fifty different ways, and I still fight with it all the way to the jobsite. It amazes me what people get away with.

How about a long 20' pole.... About six to ten of them, tied to the seat of a motorcycle...

    Ah, memories of Korea.

For our stateside Darwin candidates, I remember seeing a man and woman driving out of the parking lot with a 4' x 8' sheet of plywood "held" by the occupants on the roof. The driver had his right and out the window holding his side, and the passenger was doing the same on the other side.

I forgot the formula, something about forward velocity multiplied by surface area.... All I can tell you is that it probably didn't end well.

I've seen that phenomena before too........people think they can hold onto something that is going to generate a massive amount of lift at even very low speeds. And no, it never ends well.

I've had to come up with some creative solutions to materials handling issues, but I can safely say that nothing has ever hit the road. Gotten close a few times, but never actually happened.
