If the coral is fully encrusted all the way around and I set it on another piece of rock will it start attaching where the coral is toching the rock? Its hard to explain but think of a golf ball that is fully encrusted to the point where you cant see any seems in the coral. If you lay that on another rock will it still spread where the two are touching? Or do I need to chip a piece off to expose the edges of the coral?

If the part that touch the other rock is in the shade, it would not encrust well. I think in your case where the coral encrust all the way around, the best way is to cut it into 2 or more frags and grow it from there. You can just shatter it with a hammer and flat screw driver. Anything will easily cut LR.
