Thread: Can you have to much?

Question Can you have to much?

Can you have to bright of a light on a fish tank?
on my 15 gallon tall tank I have a 6 in LED 10k light and a 6in actinic LED.
Every time I place a sps coral into the tank they bleach, and than die. Is it something I'm doing or is their to much light?

Uh, going to need a bit more info if you want an accurate answer. Of course you can have too much light, but saying 6 inch led of this or that color don't tell us squat. Is it 6 inches with as many Cree3 watt LEDs as you can get crammed together run at full blast? If so, then that's likely too dam much. Are they a few dinky 1 watt Chinese LEDs, then that's probably not too much. What exactly are they?

    is what they are.

So two strips at 9 watts each...the LEDs must just be a fraction of a watt each and have no optics. I highly doubt your having excessive light issues.

Are the corals bleaching or getting RTN? It's more likely alk or pH is causing them to die. What is the time frame from introduction to death?

    What is RTN?
I have another tank that is 30 gallons that houses a show size montapora but that tank has 4X T5HO lighting
and they die with in like 2 days and just become white.

Rapid Tissue Necrosis. I bet the water chemistry is different between the two. Do new sps make it in your half circle tank? I run a half circle tank too...144 half circle running 3 AI Sols and 6 panorama pros so total about 340w of LEDs. I have several montipora doing just fine...no bleaching. One is about 15 inches across....is that what you'd consider show size? My tank is 90 percent sps and rarely do I have any new additions bleach or RTN....check your water chemistry, alk is the first thing I'd check. Do you run dosers or a reactor?

Yeah new ones live in my 30 gallon. Yea mine is about that big, I consider anything bigger than 10 inches show size because in corpus most corals are less than 5 inches.
i do not douse or run reactors.

Well I think if it was the water, than its ok now because I have a small incrusting montipora in the tank and its doing well. I have not done any thing different to the tank.
