Thread: Brown algae question.

    Default Brown algae question.

Hello maastards I have a couple quick questions. Let me start off with that I am constantly checking my tank and making sure it is perfect. Well I started my set up the beginning of July. We are now 5 months later and I am getting a large amount of brown algae. Well large to me lol not large to most of you. It is not on my rocks and very lightly on my sand. But i have to scrape the glass off 2 times a day My overflow is completely brown. (Don't ask but yea I didn't know you guys cleaned it out lmao) anyway lol. I put a large amount of live rock into the aquarium a little over a month ago and I think that is we're all this algae is coming from. So I guess my question is how long will I be fighting this? And what would you do to help get rid of it? I'm doing a 15% water change tomorrow and plan to clean everything out of the sump and the overflow. I do not really over feed my animals and my lights are only on full blast 6 hours and blues are on 2 hours before and after.
Switched over to the dark side of lighting. LEDs. The force is strong with this one!

Normal brown diatom blast, most likely from the introduction of the new rock. Shouldn't last long before its gone and you're dealing with the next issue.

It is temporary and happens to every new tank... Oh yeah, I believe that's what they call it, new tank syndrome.

    Allan is correct.

    Give it time.

However, if you are in a hurry, you could try setting up a media reactor with "GFO" inside. It will absorb your phosphates quickly.
