John was explaining to me the other day that he uses a slow siphon vacuum... When the sand gets halfway up the cup he pinches the line and let's it fall back down.
I've had dragons and diamond gobies. The former picks up sand and drops it from higher up in the tank. The latter takes in the sand and drops it while hovering right over the sand.
Gobies will keep your sand clean, but there is a chance if your tank is big enough that they may ignore a spot or three.
There is also the fact that a pod population living in the sand may be nonexistent with a goby.
I don't know how vacuuming a sand bed would affect pod pops. I've only done the sand vac when I had problems with cyano. I have spots where it shows up... But I don't see it on the sand because of the goby and conch... I think.
