It's just a device that allows you to upgrade all of the modules for the reef keeper....

LOL. In IT, SID means security identifier but I was pretty sure that wasn't the case.
I'm curious, how does one 'upgrade' a module? What exactly is upgradeable? The software? Aren't the modules the extra pieces you can buy the sl2 (outlets right?), net module, etc.

Yes the software.... They all have to be running the same in order to work properly... I don't know exactly what was upgraded.... I just did it to hook up my net module.. My head unit was a few updates behind..

SID hoks up your computer to RKE itself so you can upgrade firmware and do other things via computer instead of head unit..........

That makes sense.
What kind of connectors do the modules/head unit use to interface? Just curious. I wonder what ICs they are running in there. Anyone have a broken one? I want to take it apart.

rke use a type of 6 pin(pass thru like cat5 but thin), then to computer it uses a usb so SID is a kinda bridge but im sure its more than just that

Probably not. The USB is the programming interface. It's technically a serial port so it can be used to tx/rx anything you want really.
Looks like they use RJ11. I'm going to start using cat5 for most of my interfacing, assuming it doesn't need to carry much current. Right now I'm working on a super simple/cheap PWM controller for LEDs and an additional module to drive/dim LEDs directly from a DC power supply.
