Lol, I like the stone oak area. But I think real estate is expensive up here.

Ram,
I am involved with a San Antonio Area Coalition for Veterans and another group that helps returning veterans get jobs or start a business. I would love to hook you up with them BEFORE you get back. My email is crodgers1@satx.rr.com. Anyone reading this is also welcome to contact me.

Christiania,
I'm retiring within a year and will be in the market for a job, how far out is too far?

I am not sure that it is ever too soon to start networking.I know Humana Insurance company had a target number of veterans that they wanted to hire. I am really really new to the SA coalition. The other program is called Texas AgrAbility and they work with people in agriculture and related fields. Most of my connections are for disabled vets. All of the groups are tied to other veteran groups.
It is frustrating to see a higher unemployment rate for our veterans. Some job fields just don't cross over well to the civilian world.

One of the coolest things I've ever done is open a retail store. The smartest thing I've done is close that store. Don't do it if you want my advice.
If you want to do something related to the hobby use your skill with acrylic and go that route. You could work a regular job day time and spend your nights and weekends building sumps etc. until if/when you get that profitable. You would be working all the time but at least you would have income. With a retail store you will also work all the time but without the income. Generally it takes ~2 years for a retail store to get into the black...if things go well that is.
