    Default Frag tank

I don't know if this is the right place for this post but I had a question about my frag tank (20 H). I'm currently running and emperor 280 HOB filter without a bio wheel and an Aqueon 500 powerhead. The tank has been up and cycling for about 6 months with a green chromis, green clown goby, arrow crab and a 5 man CUC. My question is 1. Do I have sufficient filtration and 2. Do I need a bio wheel? If you guys have any other tips they'd be greatly appreciated.

ok the way i see frag tank is that it has to be almost better than you display tank as you are propagating and growing out stuff so you want good levels of all the elements and a very good lighting and filtration, this isnt something you throw together half hearted or "half wallet" lol. i would suggest some type of fuge or sump/fuge and a good skimmer and such. you want to feed your coral and be able to transport waste out fast.

It's that precise reason why I've always tied my frag tank to my main system. That and the thought that if it's doing well enough in the main tank it should do equally as well in the frag tank.

Thanks chris. I have a 5g that I could turn into a sump or is that too small. And how would a HOB skimmer do?

Thanks to you as well Allen, I'd love to run a system like yours but unfortunately my tank is not drilled for me to just "T" off the plumbing and go straight into my frag system. Unless there is a way to run lines from the same sump but I can't seem to come with anything.

I run from the same sump.

Just in case I don't understand what you're telling me.

I have a pump that runs water into my main tank and the overflow brings water to my sump. The cycle completes.

I have another smaller pump that runs water from the same sump to my frag tank, the overflow on the frag tank returns water to my sump... the cycle completes.

    Is this what you meant?
