You're going to Cali right? Where abouts? I'll be in San Diego next month as well. I remember several years ago an older man training for a triathlon or something was taken by a great white. I used to take the boogie board out beyond the break and wait for a huge wave to bring in. Then I'd start thinking about what was swimming around me. I bought a snorkel to take a peak while I was out there. Turns out I was too chicken to see the truth, even thought I very well know what's down there.
I guess the most frightening part to me is that it's not a question as to whether the sharks are around you, they are. They typically just don't bother you. Only problem is that if they get curious they might try to get a taste of you; and they have the ability to taste your arm or leg right off your body. The odds are against it, but it does happen.
