I've read your question and all that comes to mind is... NOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooo!!! LoL
Please Don't Do It, or you'll be sorry. I speak from experience... well kind of as I used playground sand from Home Depot about 6 years ago on my first system. Beaches are considered to be natures protein skimmer. Have you seen foam washing up at the beach? Plus the sand in our Texas beaches are silica (quartz) based which can fuel diatoms and does nothing to buffer our tanks. A number of us have considered it, but after learning the negatives decide not to. I also can't remember anyone who has incorporated silica sand in a successful reef system.

I've read a couple people using sand from the ocean. But it wasn't beach sand. There are too many toxins introduced by humans that wash up there. Sun tan lotion. Oil Spills (which happened around here). Plus like the man's signature block says. The guys i read about go out a ways. Swims down and dredges up sand from deep and uses that with great success. The ones i've read about also lived in Hawaii and California. So they do have a better sand quality. But they say the introduction of sea born parasites, dieses and such are greater. Soooo......
thanks.
just lay it in front of your tank for that real reef look
