RO Water

I have a general question that I'm hopping to get some advise for. My wife and I have recently moved into a new house and we have a RO water system (one of the regular drinking water system).

1) Can we use this for our tanks as is, as part of the inspection the guy looked at the membranes and said it still looked good and did not have to be replaced? I don't think so.

2) Can it be upgraded/new membranes put in to make it more efficient?

I would think so. I get my water from the windmill and RO units are nothing more than water filters with the right stages of filtration. I couldn't tell if you the membrane needs replacing though.

Check out some of the sponsors for more information about just exactly what kind of RO unit you have. For your tank, you would probably at least want to add an Deionizer to it also.

In the grand scheme of things, RO/DI units are cheap. Probably be better off scrapping that one and just buying a whole new unit. By the time you replace the filters, valves and membranes, you've almost spent as much as a new unit. Plus you'll now exactly what you have and what to get to maintain it.

I would test the water for nitrates, phosphates, tds, etc. If it looked good then use it! DI is certainly optimal, but so are a lot of other things.

What John said. Pick up a cheap TDS meter and test your water. If it does not have a DI unit, you will need one. Check out Buckeye for a good unit.
