from what i hear most end up not eating frozen and some people pay up to $100 for them

if you end up getting one ask for it to be fed with the stores food to make sure it ends up eating

I carry these guys at the store from time to time and asked ORA a while back what foods have the best success. I was told that they seem to prefer frozen baby brine shrimp in most cases, and sometimes New Life Spectrum pellet foods. The NLS pellets are the only non frozen food that they offer them there according to the rep I talked with.
I really haven't had more than one or two come in that weren't eating either adult or frozen baby brine , and a few of the little guys that take the pellets.
I do, however, second the above comment about making sure they are actually eating before buying.....although to be honest this is a good practice when buying ANY fish IMO.

Another thing to remember is a Mandarin is a very slow eater. If you put them in a tank with aggressive eaters they are doomed

With mandarins, as with seahorses it's not just the aggression level of the fish you need to keep in mind.....rather how greedy of a feeder they can be. Fish like wrasses can gorge on the food WAY faster than a mandarin can, so if you have them in a tank together the more passive feeders (the mandarin in this case) can often times end up starving.
As far as jumping goes I have had a few of them go over the top on me in my personal tanks over the years.
