    Default Reminder Service

Okay for all the 'I never test, dose, change water people this will look pretty silly but:

I've been logging my test results in a little book and it's nice to be able to look back and see any trends.
I also make a note when I add something new (filter media, etc.) with the date.

Works well when I want to check back on something but not so well when it's something that needs reminding.

I just signed up for a free email service and I think this will make it super easy.

For now every 5 weeks I'll get a reminder email to change the GFO. I'll test first of course and if it seems I can go longer I'll adjust the interval on that.

I was going to add a reminder for light bulbs but then I remembered I got LEDs now.
So I just set up up to remind me every six months to increase intensity by 2% since that would be equivalent to the average loss of intensity.

Anyway If you are bad about forgetting stuff (maintenance/bulbs/etc.) those email reminders might be nice.

I am using memotome.com but I am sure there are tons of them to choose from

I used to have a widget (made by current I believe) that would track a lot of things like media, bulbs, etc.

Karin, have you seen the RC thread that used a phosphate meter to test the longevity of GFO? The phosphates began dropping instantly. He tested every hour and saw a significant decreas. The reduction tapered off until it stopped reducing any measurable phosphates around day 2. I believe he did the experiment a couple times. It's been hypothesized that carbon has the same life expectancy.

I'm looking for the thread, but looks like it will be hard to find.

    Woohoo... found it!

yes post it. that will be interesting. I knew aluminum reduces quicker than GFO but needs replacing faster. Sounds like there actually may be little difference between iron based and aluminum then?

I use a digital phosphate meter as well and it's currently at undetectable levels (probably due to my iron dosed cheato -just teasing. lol) but I'm not going to replace it until it's up to 0.05ppm. Hopefully it will take at least 5 weeks to get to that point

Oh... you should test it out for us since you have a meter I was very surprised at how quickly the PO4 was reduced from a substantial level. Definitely ain't no snake oil lol

I only have a really small curve though. Started at 0.06, got as high as 0.10 and then down to 0.00 so it's not too exciting to track. But I might check at shorter intervals now just to see how it matches up with that guys findings

I set up a google calendar just a couple of months ago. It's got my carbon, GFO, bulbs - you name it. Anything and everything in my tank that needs periodic maintenance or replacement.
