Default Help needed - 75G Build Completed (Flushing Toilet Noise 24x7)

    Hi everyone,
My family and I built our 75 gallon tank this week end. All went well, and the tank looks great, I have another post bout the build. we do have one problem, the tank make A LOT OF NOISE. Not your typical bubbling, or whirring of power heads, the tank sound like a load flush toilet. I can't seem to put my finger on what is wrong. There are no leaks and the refugium/sump looks good. We tested the sump with the power off to ensure the sump does not over flow, marking high and low water marks.

the problem/noise is coming from the built in overflow. It does not seem to be filling, the is about 3-4 inches of water in it and the water rushes out of very quickly. You can see the water at the bottom of this photo. (Photo Attached)

My only thought is that maybe the return pump is not powerful enough to keep the overflow full. I can't imagine adding more water, the sump fills up to about 2 inches short of the top when the power is cut. The pump is Quite One 3000, rated at 780gph, and the pump is about 4 feet away from the return. The system was purchased used, so the pump might not be performing at peak.

Any ideas, on how to fix this? As it stand the tank is in my living room and the flushing sounds are annoying at best, not to mention they make me have the urge to go to restroom all the time. ;-)

most people run a standpipe inside the overflow to keep the noise down.

here is a link to a diy one

and if you have a durso but have the outlet under water without a reverse durso you may still get the flushing effect
So even with a durso on top be sure to NOT submerge the outlet pipes in the sump or else the effect of water/air will create the flushing.
You can submerge it if you build a reverse durso for the outlet and prevent spray that way
(do a search in the DIY -I just posted a video on the reverse durso)

Thanks for the response, I'll get one if it will help, but I need some clarification.

So that pipe, with the foam on it, is not a stand pipe?
Should the overflow have more water in it?
If so does a stand pipe help slow the water down?

    Thank for the help.

the foam is a pre filter for the drain pipe that you have now
the overflow should have more water in it as a result of the stand pipe making the water level higher - b/c it will have to be higher to drain
the stand pipe wont slow the water down - thats a good thing otherwise you will flood your living room, the rate of water draining into the overflow is dependent and equal to the rate of water flow being pumped into your tank from your sump. But if you raise the intake via a stand pipe it will make the water only have to fall say a 1/2 inch or so. this will make it so you dont get a draining/flushing noise

Look into a diy durso or stockman (stockman may be easier) or buy a megaflow drain kit. Much better design standpipes. IMO. I have a DIY durso in the DIY section. I think the tread was called "compact durso"
