Yes. That is most likely what is causing this. I lost almost all of my xenia to a choppy tiger pistol shrimp.

Now how do get them out how about a snow flake but he will get my coral banded shrimp naturely thats my wifes favoret but i think ican catch him. But will the eel be hard to catch when his job is done?
How big is your tank? The eel might work. I am not the best person to answer so maybe some other more experienced MAAST members could answer.

Any help is good it is a 75 reef with almost all softies 2 tangs 4 chromis 2 saddle backs and tons of rock for hiding.
Hey man! I had xenia do the EXACT same thing. Just the polyp part of the Xenia fell off. It happened to a whole colony of mine but they grew back bigger and better than before. I still never figured out what caused it but at the time I had nothing in the tank that would have chopped them off. It could be due to lack of flow but im not sure. Xenia is very hardy and will bounce back. Just don't give up on it. Good Luck!
I would not recommend getting a snowflake eel to get your shrimp. They are hit and miss when it comes to eating live shrimp. They have very poor eyesight. Catching them could be a challenge depending on how much rock you have in your tank. They can fit into very small holes. If you try and catch them with your hands they can inflict a nasty bite! I don't think your shrimp are harming the Xenia. Keep a close eye on the xenia I bet you will even witness the polyps fall off. I watched mine fall off. My parms were good and it bounced back with avengence!
