Thread: Classroom Tank Setup Info? Rock Recipes? Curriculum?

Default Classroom Tank Setup Info? Rock Recipes? Curriculum?

I am thinking of putting a tank up in my kids' science class at school. Wasn't there an area on here with stuff available cheap/free for teaching purposes?

Aiming for around 20 gallon community/softie setup. Nothing too complicated. Thought maybe the kids could make some of the rock for the tank. What are your favorite rock recipes, and how long/how to cure?

The kids are going on a fantastic field trip to Port Aransas on Friday. I'm going, too! Sail on a boat, touch tank, jetties, UT marine biology. Fun fun! Thought this project would fit right in.

Ace, I know you set up tanks in your classroom on a regular basis. Can you tell me what you usually teach, etc?

FYI: I am in Elgin now (About 45 min NE of Austin). LOVING the country life!!!!

Thank you so much, Robert! Whenever any of you MAASTards is in the New Branfels area, you need to stop in Darby's!

Thanks to Robert, I now have a 20 long tank, stand, cpr bakpak, some live rock, and sand!

    Still needed--used is great:

I could use a 30" light (nothing fancy--just enough for some easy softies, easy algae and fish)
    Filter (maybe biowheel?)
    1 or 2 powerheads
    heater
    thermometer
5 gallon containers for saltwater (4 or 5 hopefully)
    Test kit(s)
Maybe a little more live rock
    egg crate for the top
    extra shells for growing crabs

Animals I am hoping to put in:

nassarius snails, cerith snails, blue/scarlet/red leg crab combo
Cleaner shrimp (can I fit a pair--or just one?)
    Pair of perc clown fish
    Possibly goby and pistol shrimp
    Possibly 6 line wrasse
    Possibly emerald crab
    green stars
    various zoas
    various shrooms
    red sea xenia
maybe colt coral or other leather(s)
cant decide between bubble coral and toadstool (for clowns)
    a pretty algae or two

Let me know what you have available and for how much. Also, feel free to voice your opinion on my choices of inhabitants. I doubt I can get all that stuff in there, so tell me your favorites--or make other suggestions. Thanks, all!
