our kids have their Thomas the Train set on a coffee table we got off craiglist. It even has lots of baskets underneath so they can store all their stuff. Plus since it's a coffee table it's low to the ground and even the little ones can easily reach everything.
If you don't find the blue prints you could always start out with an old coffeetable and convert it to a train table.

Yeah those things are expensive...ridiculously expensive. We lucked out and scooped one up from Toys-r-us last year during the Holidays for like $75!

Anyways...good luck. Hope you take some pics, very cool to build that for your kids.

Make them a regular train table. Kids only get older, so as they grow, they will probably enjoy getting to pick out the individual pieces for the setup. Or you could just start them on a reeftank

my kid just turned 3 (two days ago) and we got him this one.

from t r us. it was about $160.00 but i can EASILY say it was well worth it. even my one yr old will stand there and push the trains around.
to purchase all the components individually would have cost well over $250 and it is compatible with every other wood track system made. seems very sturdy to me! and i love the drawers for stowage.

shoot i even play with it alot. its great!!
how can i pray for you?
