Thread: dinoflagellates

    Default dinoflagellates

Ok, I think I have dinoflagellate starting to spread in my tank. I'm getting a clear slimy coating on my glass/sump, and the water is cloudy looking. You can really tell when you change the filter sock, plus the sock only lasts a day or two because of the slime. I'm not possitive this is my problem, but I think it might be. So, what is the fix. I have changed filter media, added more phosguard and carbon. Now I need to raise my pH from what I have read, which is ok my pH is low. After testing the water the other day, my CA was around 360 and kH was 180 (both cheap api kits) pH was only in the 7.9-8.0 area. With those bad numbers, looks like Kalk might be the way to go. I have been using esv 2 part, but not everyday :( . With no sand and new rock, seems like keeping my levels up is more of a challenge. Using fans my tank has alot of evaporation, so should I look into using kalk w/ ato over 2 part? Any advise would be great, Thanks.

Steve, I now use both. I started using Reefplenish two-part and still dosing my 1000ml of kalk every other day. I keep my Mag above 1500ppm. My Ca is now 460-70, dkh is 9 and ph stays between 8.2/8.4. I have been using the reefplenish 2-part for two weeks and already see a difference. For my tank (basically just like yours), I use 5ml of both parts now. My Ca was around 400 and alk 12. I started dosing 5ml of A and 3ml of B and got them in line w/in 2 weeks. Great stuff and very concentrated. The 8oz bottles will last me a month to six weeks.

Kalk dripping should be fine on your system. Once your system has a ton of corals, of course, your demands will change. Drip right after lights out.

see if you can borrow a microscope. Diatoms and Dinos can look very similar. Under the microscope though the dinos will have a tail

Anyone have any good info or links for using kalk with my ato, or is this too risky trying to get the kalk mix just right. Even if its just with the ato at night, I don't mind moving the pump to another container at night.

I have a reactor for sale. Don't get any easier than that.
