I am assuming fishing line is reef safe and doesn't degrade into anything toxic, right?
I am thinking of sewing a little patch of mesh onto my MP40 after the horrid experience with the anthias swimming directly into the Vortech's wetside...

I can't imagine an anthias going through one of the side slits on a Vortech -- seems too small.. I'd imagine that the problem was the front gaps, where the majority of volume is pushed out. The foam ring only covers the sides..
Karin -- aren't you fearful that the mesh will effect your flow rates drastically?

Oh, and to answer your original question -- monofilament won't degrade in saltwater, it'll hold up just fine

Yup. The foam ring is for the sides which already only have pretty skinny gaps anyway.
I was going to use the 1/4" mesh I had used for my screen top. I don't think 1/4" openings would impair the flow much. Definitely less than the foam ring (slowing down intake should slow down output don't you think?)
I got my 4 anthias yesterday and while releasing them 3 went into the rock work for hiding - the fourth headed straight for the MP40!!!
:o
I had turned them down to slow and they had the foam covers on the side so it wasn't going as fast as usual. I also yanked off the dry side right away to shut down the wet side from spinning.
But it was still quite shocking (for both of us -the anthias and myself!)
Karin
...thats a very good point. I actually would think that impeding the sides would do more to impede flow, now that I think about it -- all the suction comes in through the thinner grated sides, which fully determines what exits through the front.. a 1/4" mesh should be ok. You may create a new aftermarket product for the Vortech line here!
I read about your Anthias adventure last night -- glad it all seems to have come through 'swimmingly'

even if the mesh impeeded flow i would reckon that it slows it down less than an anthias full on lol, I say go for it should work well
Until a prototype exists, the rights are still up for grabs...

Lol. There you go:
