Found Dog

On the way home, two cars in the lane next to me got into a wreck. The first driver was trying to avoid hitting a dog. There were two dogs; one got hit.

I got out to help the dog. (Yes, the people were okay.) The little guy wasn't likely to survive, but I carried him off the road and held him for whatever comfort I could give. That's when his friend walked up.

A female mix puppy, approximately 10 months, came and laid next to her friend. She seemed very shy, but wouldn't leave him. When the police showed up, I agreed to take the survivor and do what I could to find her owner. It was hard to get her away from the site.

I've got her set up in my garage for now. She's very sweet, but I always keep rescues separate from my pets until they settle down - she's been through enough today.

No tags on either, but their fur had rings that showed collars have been worn before. My usual routine is to take pics, make flyers, and post them at local businesses. I'll also call the paper to put in a "found" add, it's usually free. I'm worried about this situation though, the owners may be looking for adds that specify two dogs, and she's a very common looking mutt. It's hard to be delicate in the add, that two were lost, and only one was rescued.

The area I picked her up at doesn't have a whole lot of housing real nearby. She was found on Kittyhawk near 1604 in Universal City. She looks to be possible yellow lab mix, by her coloring and coat. But the head shape and face coloring are random. Just about any medium sized dog could be called a lab mix.


Any advice, tips, or prayers are welcome. I've rescued many lost pets, but never had one die in my arms. And to have a survivor, lost and confused, is stressful on both of us. :(

thats really cool of you, if there where more people like you this world would be a better place , ill help you find her a nice home if you havent already.. . i really appreciate people like you.. dont want to embarrass you ,just think its cool...

That is so nice of you! I am sorry for puppy's death that has caused your heart to hurt. In regards to the surviver "MAASTY" I hope he/she finds her owners. And if not I hope its able to find a good loving home.

All humans were fine. I wasn't even involved in the accident, I was in the next lane. One guy's car was pretty crunched, but even he came over to check on the dog.

I'm a wreck about this. I know to some people it seems sappy, but to me it's so sad to watch one dog lose its life while another dog loses its friend and its home.

I probably have an 80%-90% success rate with reuniting lost pets with their owners. I haven't kept count, but I've helped reunite A LOT of pets over the years. We're known in this neighborhood as the animal family. We have so many pets we went before city council for a special permit to keep them all within city limits. (Proud to say, our permit was granted, and even the local animal control officer is cooperative with our rescues.)

I never question the situation when I see a pet lost. I tell myself, "I can't save them all, but I can save THIS one." I can only pray someone would do the same for me.

For some reason I'm not optimistic about this situation. She's been through so much trauma, I would love to reunite her with her family. But if that's not possible, I hope to give her another chance at a safe home.

Sorry the other one didn't make it. You never know. The usual (leaving info with the vets and local shelters) might bring her home after all.
If not it sounds like she's already in a good place now.

Update: a whole two hours later....

She can not stand to be alone. It's probably just the trauma. The whole house, animals and humans alike, can't sleep with her crying. :( It will be a rough day for all of us tomorrow.

I've broken my own house rule. She is in my bedroom. My cat will never forgive me. Hopefully my breeding conures will ignore her as she ignores them. One thing for sure, she's scared to death of cats. Granted, mine are insane/aggressive/monsters.

She's certainly a house pet. She's perfectly comfortable hopping on my bed and making herself comfortable.

There are construction workers coming to the house Monday. If I can't find her original home by that time, or at least acclimate her to my other pets, I hope to find her a good home.

I CAN NOT keep her. I have a special permit to keep the pets I have. I would be breaking an agreement with the city to keep her more than a few days.

Any offers for a foster or permanent home would be appreciated. I can't turn away an animal in need, but I can't give up my own to bring in a new comer either.

Such a hard spot to be in.
