Xenia is a water quality indicator. As your water quality improves, Xenia generally goes down hill. I've had tanks that grow it, move it to another and it melts.

Just be aware that Xenia absorbs heavy metals and pollutants, and when it dies, they get released.

I second what Bill says. Xenia loves pollution.

Bill and Alton are right, this has been the case for me as well. I had a FOWLR, and xenia grew like crazy due to the pollution from the bigger fish. Also, one thing to add if your running carbon, stop and see if your xenia comes back around.

Same here. Xenia grew like crazy in a nutrient rich tank and not so well in a low nutrient tank.

I had an issue when my skimmer turned off after a water change. They melted pretty quick. They were the only thing affected and bounced right back after the skimmer was turned back on.

Funny, my problem was the exact opposite. My skimmer was broke and xenia took off, my skimmer was fixed and they started depleting. I now alternate skimming time and they are doing fine.
