If you are downloading them from iTunes, you will not need a converter. I have not found a good converter to take movies from dvd to put them on my ipod. I did download a converter, which said it was free, but when I tried to use it, it either put a line across the movie that said the name of the program or you had to buy the program. Most dvds are also protected, so you need another program to break the protection to be able to download a copy. What a PAIN...

Handbrake -- its available for OSX, Linux and Windows -- its completely free, and it will create .mp4 format video quite easily. (MP4 is the format you want for iPod video)

I use several of these:

They are small programs, simple to use and completely free. No limits or watermarks.

I've also used this one in the past. Seemed to work fine for me.
