Default IT reefers! Suggestions on new computers.

Hi all, I'd love to hear some suggestions on desktops and laptops.

Is there really any difference in reliability between brands now?

I've used Dell mostly in the past with good reliability but have been hosed by them on financing etc. so don't really want to support them anymore.

Consumer Reports mentioned Apple, Compaq, eMachines, and Dell as top 4 for Desktops and Toshiba, Sony, Acer, and Apple top for laptops. All in order starting with most reliable.

I'm not ready to go Apple.

Looking at Toshiba Satellite A505-S6960 Core 2 Duo T6500 and no idea on desktop. Used for office, web, QuickBooks (possibly some higher level software for business later).

Egghead the best place to buy if not from one of the factories?

    Thanks,

    Todd

Newegg has the best prices if you are looking to build your own desktop. What exactly are you looking for in a new pc? It all depends on what you use it for. For example if you burn lots of DVD's or re-encode then you should buy a quad core chip. If you just use it for word processing and surfing then you can get by with a speedier dual core.

+1 -- with all the technically adept people on this board, I guarantee we can part together a much better computer, for much cheaper, than the manufacturers can provide. I'm sure theres plenty of us with system-building experience who could help you through it. Give us your goals -- if you want to play games on it, that changes the perspective a bit, etc...

    O.K, thanks guys.

General Web, e-mail, quickbook and run fax/printer/scanner.

Some graphic design stuff for work.

Yes, we do copy a LOT of DVD's for work.

Not much on gaming possibly watch a movie for the kids.

We will be going to a larger office with central printer, wireless?, etc down the road some I'm sure.

    Ideas? What am I missing?

    Thanks again!

Find what you are looking for, top 2 or 3 say, and then start shopping for them. I find www.slickdeals.NET the best place to find deals. Especially if you are looking for a Dell - there are some very creative deal builders out there.

    Thanks Bill and Tony!

I don't know this stuff from Shineola (spelling).

I probably also need to look in to in house backup of systems in addition to the on line we already do.
