Sounds like you bought too many fish at one time, and got the fish stressed out.

I keep a little 10 gallon glass aquarium around for quarantining. I run it with a hand on filter. The little filter sponge that goes into that is removable so I keep that in the sump under my display tank to keep it 'live' (good bacteria).
When I want to add a new fish I just do a water change and use 10 gallons of the display tank water to fill up the quarantine tank and then I take the filter sponge and put it back into the hang on filter.
Doesn't take long at all to set up. It also helps the new arrivals get accustomed (without competition) to the kind of foods I feed and regain condition before they join the rest in the display tank.
I think quarantine is a good idea no matter where you get stuff from. Like somebody else already said: I bet all of the LFS get their fish from the same/similar vendors.
