Thread: Closed loop or not

    Default Closed loop or not

How's it going, If you guys are not aware this is going to be my first SW tank. I just want to get everything straight before I build. So, closed loop or not? I understand this setup(still alittle off on the complete plumbing side of it). I know this is a better setup, and seem to be cheaper than a bunch of internal powerheads but as this is my first SW tank would I just be complicating everything or saving me money and frustration down the line? Thanks, stephen.

All depends on the size you want to do... Closed loop configurations are fantastic, but IMO somewhat overkill for a tank less than ~120-130 gallons... Koralia and similar pumps are quite affordable, and create ample movement in the tank for these dimensions... The bigger you want to go though, the more likely a closed loop will make sense.

I agree with Justin, closed loop on a smaller system doesn't make much sense. Plumbing issues, not to mention drilling the bottom glass in several places would deter me from even considering it. We are big fans of Vortech's which offer excellent water flow and movement for minimal space and power/heat usage. We have the name of a great place we used where we got good deals on ours.

Mike, mind sharing the place? I may pick up an MP10 and wave-time it on my 75 when I get it up...

Taking this thread off track - sorry...

No problem, Justin... anyone else who wants to know, just pm us. We prefer not to post openly for non-sponsors, but we are working on getting this guy to sponsor MAAST. Also, it might help to convince him if we hit him up for a group order. Already have one other member who is onboard for an mp40 and we need a new wet side for one of our mp20s, so we're well on our way.
