Salt Water Brewing

I have been considering brewing my own salt water. For the past few years I have been buying it from the LFS, I generally spend about 25 bucks a week on water. I think that brewing it myself would be considerably cheaper. Any thoughts?

Lets see on average a bucket of salt (150-200 gal depends on brand) runs about $50.. So unless you are changing more than 200gals a week I would say that yes it would be saving you money and time to mix yourself..

Dont forget about factoring in the cost of water and or filters if you have your own RO/DI unit. That can definately add to the cost of the water, just something else to consider.

at times i don't think it was worth buying an RODI almost 300$ later but then to haul all that water again it kind of makes it worth it

on average: 0.25 per gallon of rodi water plus $50 salt divided by 200gallons equals .025. so you are spending .50 per gallon for IMO better quality salt and being able to adjust salinity as needed. Last I remember, premade SW was about 0.50 per gallon?

I would difinately do this. I bought the free from the beginning so don't really have too much experience with buying premade but I wouldn't risk my water quality. Too many variables buying premade for me. Filters, TDS content, salt used just to name a few. Alot easier to make your own at home imo.

Dude Derek, it is well worth it. Despite having to change filters, some as often as 2-3 months (like your sediment filter, 5-8 bucks), WELL worth it. Just buy some bulk DI resin and store it in your freezer. Keep your DI resin packed, and swap your sediment filter every other, other, time you go to the LFS. You can unfreeze and rinse all of your foods in it as well. That will keep your phosphates lowwwwwwwww.

What's DI Resin? Right now I pay $1.25 a gallon for saltwater. I buy 25 gallons a week. I am definitely considering brewing my own. I can probably just do it in a big rubbermaid jug to start out with, then work my way out to a larger drum. I'd just need to find the space for it in my house. I think my garage would be too hot.
