The shop owner may be able to show that it was sold to you after he had a lien put on the truck for non payment on repairs.
When I transferred my daughters truck from her name to mine, the clerk asked me the value of the truck. I told her I was taking it for parts. I was taxed $15 ( If I remember correctly ) after the clerk advised me to check it off as a gift.
