Thread: Kerosene in pond--how to clean?

Default Kerosene in pond--how to clean?

In our recent move to Elgin, some kerosene from a lantern spilled into my dry pre-formed pond. How can I clean this so it is safe for my turtle and fish?

Depending on the amount, if it was a small amount in a large pond, it shouldn't be a big deal. If the pond is dry, soak up what you can, and rinse it very well. If it is already full, try and light the surface of the water! Just Kidding! If it's full already, you may want to drain it.

HA!! Lighting the surface of the water would be too much fun. Too bad there is a burn ban. :(

It is dry--I think the kerosene is dried up too. It was a small amount--but BIG stench. I was afraid I would have to throw it out. Good news that I can probably just lather, rinse, repeat.

On another note: I need to get this pond dug. Anyone have a bobcat (or large shovel )or something in the Elgin area? I actually want to make the pond bigger than the preformed part and use liner over both. That way, if my dogs dig a hole in the liner, the preformed will keep everybody alive. (Bad experience with this before). What would you charge to help me?

    Thanks, guys!!

Angela, make sure when you dig out the new area to leave a lip all the way around. Put your cloth liner in and then your other liner on top of the lip. Then place rocks on that and it looks natural rather than touching grass, giving it the "flooded" look!

The kerosene will permeate the pond, to some extent. Use Dawn to clean with, it's the least toxic soap. I'm afraid it might leach some kerosene out for a while. If it does, white paper towels are the best for removing it. Just drop them flat on the water surface.
