Default Help with algae in pond??

My mom has an 1,100 gallon pond, the filtration isnt all that good. It's your typical unit at Lowe's that has some bioballs and filters and a small uv sterilizer built in. It clogs up every 3-4 days and the pond is always dark. Has about 8-9 koi and some are very large and fat. Then we have the problem fish that are small black mollies (over 400 i bet)

We use tap water to topoff but dont use dechlorinator. What can I do to help make the pond clear??

If it's in the direct sun it will probably never clear up with just a standard filtration system.

You can run the outlet of the filter into a stocking or pantyhose and it will catch alot of the suspended algae particles that are clouding up the water. It's kind of a never ending battle.

    You need more UV lighting.

Could also be from overstocking or over feeding. 1100 gallons should be a max of 110 inches of fish.

You could try adding some barley hay to the water. It is supposed break down into hydrogen peroxide and kill the algae. I've tried it and couldn't tell the difference. Your best bet is to add a stronger UV light and to give the pond some shade. Plants work great also, but since you have koi that might not be possible.

Duck weed and other aquatic plants that cover the top of the pond if you want some I will be glad to share mine. As for the duck weed I would add some and see if its still there the next day if not the you'll have to grow it in a bucket. My pond use to get full sun and that was the only thing that cleared mine and the duck weed is one of the best ammonia remover and phosphates also.
