ok as someone who has worked in the food service industry for many many years they handled it alll wrong. First the golden rule to customer service is "The customer is always right" now it wsa neither your fault and "probly" not their fault that the cc machine was down. on rare occasion you'll have someone special ed that will unplug the dam thing and nonoe can fig out why it is not working......true story. but anywho no matter what you ardered even if it was 20 bucks worth of food they should have let you had....and asking back for the drinks dont know how to comprehend that one all they could do with them is throw them out so already out the .02 yes thats right fountain drinks cost companies .02-.05 to serve and charge almost 2 bucks for them. alright well im done venting on your bad expierence...come by Chipotle some day ill hook you up

There would not have been any returning of items with my kids in the backseat....by the time they returned with the card I guarantee my kids would have been finished. Would have been interesting to try to give it back at that point

I've worked at Mc D, Hardees, BK, Wendy's, Pizza Hut, Popeyes, and a few other full service resturants before I joined the Military.
It can't be too hard to get the order right... and I have asked one of the numerous times I get hosed in the drive through (won't let them have my food back either, but I stopped doing that when I started working at my first resturant). I really like the answer that it was "just a mistake"... The only thing they have to do is get the order right. Just that! Not asking to have them figure out how best to employ a solar panel into a home's electrical system. Just make the correct sandwhich and put it into the bag... all of the sandwhiches. See, I've gotten the wrong sandwhich, but most often than not I get no sandwhich at all. We've taken to verifying our orders at the window, but then you really run the risk of extra sauce in your burger should you have to send the guy back for an additional sandwhich that he forgot.
Two days ago I went through whataburger and when the order came to the window the kid read the receipt back to me. I told him "that I am actually less impressed with the fact that you can read the receipt as I will be if the order is indeed correct to the receipt that you have read". I got a rather blank look, laughing I drove off. The order was correct.
I've been through a Mc D when the card machine went down. They asked me if I have cash and I told them no... it being the 21st century and all... and they gave me the meal. Good answer.
However, most of these burgers don't go into the trash. Right away that is. They go into a bucket so that management can count them at the end of the shift to verify no loss, or keep track of the inventory. Mc.D actually counts their paper cups at the end of the night.
On a positive note, on one occasion I got home with my order and realized they gave me quite a few extra items. Extra sandwhiches, fries and even two pies.
Customer service, for me at least, is the one thing that will keep me coming back even if the food isn't all that great. I can't tell you that the customer is always right because they're not, but the customer should always feel welcomed.
Off the soap box now...
