I have a "System Security" pop up on my computer. It's a fake ad, but it made itself a part of my tool bar, and put a warning on my background. It won't let me get to the control panel to delete it. How do I get rid of this thing?

Re-boot
I'm sure it has a name attached to it some how, search google with the name of it and removal.
this is also a good tool for spyware:

Does it pop up every few seconds with a window that tells you that your pc is at risk? If so, I don't think a re-boot will help.
I had success with sweeping my hard drive with Windows Defender and Spybot in safe-mode. Fixed it right away and haven't had any traces since.

Here's what you do:
Go to www.malwarebytes.org, download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, install it, update it, and run a quick scan. Follow any instructions that the software gives you.
Let me know if you have further problems.

ya it kinda depends on what it is. sounds like standard spyware. could come from various thing remember never click on anything unless your sure what your clicking on. most spyware come from people clicking on ads from websites. like mharmon said a anti spyware program is the best way to remove it from your computer. back in the day when i was a full time pc tech i normally ran a combo of adaware (free version works fine paid version runs in realtime) and AVG anti spyware program. now spyware has a nasty habit of relocating itself as soon as it is removed. the trick was running both of those scans at the same time....worked about 90% of the time...adaware is froma company called lavasoft and AVG is well AVg should be easy enough to find.
hope this helps
Thanks for all your help. It looks like running the computer in safe mode, then running ad-aware, spypbot, and malwarebytes, took care of it. All is quiet on the computer. Thanks again!
Okay, I spoke too soon. Still have an issue. Everything seems to be okay except for when I run a search on a search engine. No matter what result/topic I click on, the bug "redirects" me to some other ad. Any advice on programs to fix this? I've already used the three above.
